'Dear Nigerian Lawyers, I Need to Understand this Law' - Don Jazzy Asks Lawyers A Question
Mavins Boss, Don Jazzy has asked Nigerians an important question which is also on the minds of many Nigerians. In a video he posted on Twitter, he asked lawyers why they do not advertise their business but are called solicitors. It is true that lawyers are solicitors and are also in business, but they do not post adverts on social media or conventional media.
A look at the rules shows that lawyers are not allowed to solicit or advertise in a way that will demean other lawyers. Some lawyers argue that Rule 39(1) of the Rules of Professional Conduct allows lawyers to promote themselves by being Professional and creating a brand but that a lawyer cannot solicit for a personal employment. Lawyers cannot share handbills or advertise their service on radio or social media.
However, a lawyer can promote himself by writing legal opinions or being a public affairs analyst on social media or on other types of media but will not advertise himself to the public
